Do I need to install SSD Manufacturer provided drivers when using HighPoint NVMe RAID solutions?
When using a HighPoint NVMe RAID controller or enclosure, make sure that manufacturer provided NVMe drivers, such as Samsung NVMe driver for Windows, are not installed. These drivers are not required if you are using a HighPoint NVMe RAID solution.
In fact, manufacturer –specific NVMe drivers will usually conflict with HighPoint NVMe RAID solutions, and may result in the loss of data, broken arrays, and stability issues.
If you have installed any SSD specific drivers, uninstall these – this will allow the HighPoint NVMe driver to function properly. Please refer to the procedure outlined below – it uses the Samsung NVMe driver as an example.
1. For the purposes of this article, the Samsung NVMe driver was installed to a system hosting an SSD7000 series controller. Upon rebooting the system, the WebGUI is no longer accessible: The Samsung NVMe driver will prevent the HighPoint WebGUI management software from detecting the SSD7xxx/62xx/65xx series controller or enclosure.
2. To determine which driver is active, access Device Manager, and expand Storage Controllers.
This particular test platform was hosting an SSD7101A-1 controller. Device Manager reports 4 Samsung driver entries (one for each NVMe SSD/Port) – these have overwritten the HighPoint NVMe driver:
3. Next, you will want verify the presence of the Samsung driver using Control Panel. Select “Uninstall or change a program” and search for the Samsung entry (shown below):When an SSD manufacturer driver is installed (such as the Samsung driver), the HighPoint NVMe driver will be unable to load – this will disable any arrays you have created and prevent the WebGUI from accessing the controller.
4. Uninstall the Samsung NVMe driver using Control Panel and restart the system.
Uninstall Samsung NVMe drive
5. After restarting, check Device Manager and make sure the HighPoint Driver is loading properly:Note: If the Samsung NVMe driver entry is still displayed, right-click and select Update driver. Browse for the location of the HighPoint NVMe driver download – repeat this for each entry. Then reboot once more. If the problem persists, please contact our Support Department.
6. The WebGUI should now be able to access the HighPoint NVMe RAID controller:
